Our Mission
Dut Tong was a young boy in 1987, growing up in Akoch Atong Village in South Sudan, when Sudan to the North waged violent war on his country. During an attack, Dut fled the village, surviving on his own. In 2004, the United Nations airlifted him and thousands of other Lost Boys out of refugee camps in Ethiopia. Now an American citizen, in 2016, he started this foundation to support his village.
The Akoch Atong Village Project’s mission is to assist the people of South Sudan battle some of the greatest threats they face today, which include poor water sources, inadequate food supply, lack of medical care, lack of simple over-the-counter medicines and lack of education. It is the Corporation’s mission to provide a continuing source of funds and support for the village of Akoch Atong in all areas, including food, water, medical care and education through ongoing donations and/or applications for grants.
Akoch Atong Village Project is building a new 4-classroom school. In the village, all students are equally educated, even the girls. Previously, many students had to learn outdoors under a tree because of lack of classroom capacity. During the long rainy season, students had to stay home. After repairing the roof on the oldest school, and after building a two-classroom school, the foundation is now building another new school so that all students can learn indoors. Fundraising is being targeted to raising the $5,000-$8,000 needed to install the roof.
